Magnesite and Magnesia
This Assembly emphasises the strategic importance of the magnesite and magnesia sector. When processed into various forms of magnesia, magnesite is crucial for steelmaking, non-ferrous metal production, glass manufacturing, and ceramics. Over half of the EU's critical raw materials depend on magnesite as a key input, highlighting its essential role across multiple industries.
Assess the implication of Magnesite and magnesia in the energy intensive industries.
Value EU producers struggling with the international competitors
Promote the EU magnesia industry and its contribution as enabler to a low carbon economy
Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA):
- Secure recognition of magnesia and magnesite as critical raw materials within the CRMA to strengthen the EU’s resource security and industrial resilience.
Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM):
- Prevent the inclusion of mined raw materials as precursors under CBAM, ensuring that the mining sector is not unfairly penalised and remains competitive globally.
Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS):
- Advocate for the mining sector’s role in CCUS technologies, aiming for future legislative frameworks to support and integrate mining-related contributions to climate mitigation, despite the current regulatory gap.
