Study on the Competitiveness of the EU Primary and Secondary Mineral Raw Materials Sectors

Yesterday the European Commission has published its new report “Study on the Competitiveness of the EU Primary and Secondary Mineral Raw Materials Sectors”.
The study provides a complete, up-to-date and concise overview of the competitiveness of the European primary and secondary Mineral Raw Materials Sectors (MRMS). It focuses mainly on the non-energy extractive industries (NEEI) and the related recycling industries (RI).

INTRAW ‐ Fostering international cooperation on raw materials

In the last decade, a structural change has taken place in the world’s mineral markets and the global demand for raw materials stands at the bottom of a new growth curve. In this perspective, safeguarding the domestic minerals supply in a sustainable and responsible way will be challenging not only to Europe but also to other technologically advanced countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, South Africa and the United States. As part of the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Programme for Research & Innovation (R&I), the new EU funded 36‐month project INTRAW has been launched in February 2015 to foster international cooperation on raw materials.

EESC Spanish Industrial Roundtable

Following its own commitment the EESC (European Economic and Social Committee’s) /Euromines/Euracoal have organised the first of 4 Industrial Roundtables in Madrid. Hosted by Confedem, the Spanish association, who has just joined Euromines, high level representatives of the Spanish government, the regional ministries, industry, unions and NGOs discussed the future policies for investment and development of the extractive sector in Spain.

EU-AU Joint Session on Infrastructure for the Raw Materials Sector

Organised by the African Union Commission and the European Commission the EU-AU Joint Session on Infrastructure for the Minerals Sector took place in Brussels from 19th to 20th March 2015.

The aim of this event was to discuss the infrastructure needs of the raw materials sector and identify ways in which those can find support in the broader context of existing and planned infrastructure projects and networks.

New information system on raw materials launched by Joint Research Centre

General News

On 16th March 2015 the JRC launched the Raw Materials Information System (RMIS), a comprehensive online repository of information on policies, activities and data related to the European raw materials sector. The RMIS supports a series of European Commission initiatives which aim to tackle the pressure on valuable resources and their more efficient use to the benefit of EU’s economies.

Crans Montana Forum on Africa & South-South Cooperation

From 12th to 14th March 2015 Crans Montana Forum took place in Dakhla, Marocco. The aim of the Forum was to create an opportunity for top-level Representatives of Africa and the rest of the World, and the local populations to interact and share projects and visions for the future.
The event gathered top level decision makers from governments, NGOs and the private sector from around the world, aiming to address the challenges of African integration, Africa’s role on the international stage, the new South-South synergies of common development, the issues of natural resources and growth.

Reindustrialization of Europe - Minerals Industry Contribution

Brussels, 20 November 2014: Today at the Non-Energy Extractive Industry Panel Conference, Euromines presented its position paper: “Minerals Industry Contribution to Sustainable Development”. In the document, Euromines' members highlight the importance of needing a healthy industrial market within the EU, what the mining industry needs to answer the new European Commissioner’s call for increased investment in the EU and what the mining industry needs to be realise its potential to be a contributor to European recovery over the long-term.
