EC: Reducing the EU's dependency on raw materials: EIP launched

On the 12th February 2013 the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) on raw materials was officially launched by European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani. On this occasion a press conference took place in Brussels and the memorandum was issued (Please see the attached file).

The press conference was followed by the 1st High Level Steering Group Meeting. Dr. Corina Hebestreit participated in the meeting. The specific report from Euromines will follow.

Euromines Policy Committee is following the whole issue and is preparing the inputs and positions.

ICMM report on leading indicators for occupational H&S

General News

ICMM launched a report on leading indicators for occupational health and safety in the mining industry.

"Leading indicators are used to measure the direct and indirect precursors that lead to incidents; providing an opportunity for preventative action to be taken," said ICMM's René Aguilar at the ICMM Health and Safety Conference in Santiago, Chile. This is in contrast to lagging indicators which are used after an incident has occurred.

A Swedish and Polish Contribution to the Raw Materials Initiative

The conference on Swedish and Polish Contribution to the EU Raw Materials Initiative was held in Brussels on 27 November 2012. It was organized by KGHM Polska Miedź, LKAB, ZGH Bolesław and Boliden with the support of Euromines. It was held under the auspices of Permanent Representation of Sweden & Republic of Poland to the EU. More than 50 participants attended.

Regions in the forefront: Raw Materials & Tourism 2012

With the support of the Geological Survey Department and Mines Service of Cyprus, Euromines - the European Association of Mining Industries Metal Ores & Industrial Minerals - organized an international conference entitled ‘Regions in the Forefront: Raw Materials & Tourism 2012’ with high level participation from the European extractive industry, governmental institutions, geological surveys and academia across Europe. The conference took place on 30th and 31st October in Limassol  (Cyprus) and it was an official conference of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Conference was under the auspices of the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment of Cyprus, Mr. Sofoklis Aletraris.

Mining has a growing role in economic development and poverty reduction

ICMM has launched two landmark publications - “The role of mining in national economies” and “Trends in the mining and metals industry”.

The publications are the fourth and fifth releases in an on-going series focusing on mining's contribution to sustainable development. The series has been commissioned by ICMM to spark a constructive dialogue about the key issues the mining industry faces. It seeks to set out some of the more important benefits, costs, risks and responsibilities related to mining and metals in today’s world.

I2Mine Press Release

Funding has been secured from the European Commission 7th Framework Programme for the I2Mine project, an initiative focused on the technological challenges the mining industry is currently facing including the exploitation of ever deeper deposits and the aspiration for an invisible, safe, zero impact mine.  The project will be carried out by a consortium of 26 companies and academic institutions from 10 European countries led by LKAB from Sweden over a period of 4 years.

Raw Materials Initiative - Pilot Action

A consortium, led by TNO (and as partners Euromines, d’Appolonia, BRGM, Ifremer, NTUA, the University of Leoben, CIKTN) (and endorsed by the ETP-SMR) has been tasked by the EC to collect information and suggestions on innovative technologies and pilot plants throughout the EU-27, and propose criteria and indicators to come to a prioritization among these suggestions. This will support the ambition of the EIP on Raw Materials to target  10 innovative pilot actions along the whole raw materials value chain. Yesterday, an invitation to participate in a web-based questionnaire was issued to a long list of industry associations and European Technology Platforms, with the request to distribute the information about this questionnaire to their members and associates.

Euromines has released its new publication "Views on Indicators of Resource Efficiency".

Resource Efficiency should yield optimum solutions to the trade-offs that exist between different environmental objectives and the environmental, social and economic imperatives of Sustainable Development. The result should be an economy that optimises its use of resources and, therefore, results in improved living conditions and reduced waste globally. The European extractive industries fully support the premise that life cycle management approaches are required to describe and monitor Resource Efficiency.

Euromines Critical Raw Materials Conference - 9 March 2012

Press Release

On March 9, 2012 Euromines, the European Association of Mining Enterprise, organised a Conference on Critical Raw Materials in Brussels. About 130 delegates attended.

The event was stimulated by the European Union Report on Criticality and aimed at providing input for the upcoming review of results achieved so far, the fine-tuning of the methodology, presenting specific case studies, benchmarking with similar work outside the EU and taking into account what had already been done at UN and OECD level.

Euromines Annual Report 2011

On March 8, 2012 Euromines has released its Annual Report 2011.

For European mining the year 2011 was a good one, but the industry still faced challenges due to the uncertain economic climate. The extractive industry exists for the effective transformation of natural resources into working assets. It is therefore right that European citizens should understand how their minerals industries contribute to their basic needs and maintain their quality of life.
