Redefining resources: Navigating the raw materials demand-supply hold in allocating funds for the green transition

The #EUIndustryDays2023 showcased a pivotal Euromines panel debate, delving into the intricate dynamics of EU markets’ demand and supply of raw materials. Ongoing initiatives like the Critical Raw Materials Act and Net Zero Industry Act took center stage, reflecting the industry’s commitment to sustainable practices.

The primary objective of the panel was to discuss effective funding allocation strategies for the EU industry, with a specific focus on the renewable energy sector.

The discussion and Q&A session delved into several essential aspects, starting with facilitating progress in the renewables value chain. The panel explored how climate funding could go beyond deploying technologies to reduce progress throughout the renewables value chain effectively.

Participants discussed whether critical points and bottlenecks within the renewable energy ecosystem were primarily located upstream or downstream or if both sectors faced challenges. The focus had also shifted to how the EIB, acting as a climate bank, could meet the raw materials funding demands of the renewable energy sector.

Moreover, the panel addressed the various types of funding required. It examined potential similarities between the renewables upstream and downstream sectors before moving on to how differences in capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX) intensity could be considered in the funding allocation process.

Euromines, through its distinguished panelists, offered valuable insights into optimizing funding for the EU industry at #EUIndustryDays. The event underscored the necessity of comprehending the renewables value chain intricacies and strategically addressing sector-specific challenges.
