Conflicting EU policies are killing the raw materials industries vital to steel making and steel recycling

Recent EU level negotiations concerning the application of the Emissions Trading System after 2021 jeopardise the activity, competitiveness and mere existence of several upstream industries such as the mining industry, the carbon and graphite sector and the refractories industry, sectors vital to the steel making and steel recycling. If no supportive measures are taken, Europe will soon become fully dependent on Chinese and Indian imports.

Industry4Europe is calling for a long-term vision for the European industry

In its latest Joint Paper the Industry4Europe coalition is calling for a long-term vision for the European industry that demands a long-term governance structure, which goes beyond the 6-month EU Presidency cycle and the 5-year mandate of the current European Commission. Industry4Europe is a large and unprecedented coalition, Euromines is one of its members, which brings together 129 European Industrial Federations representing all manufacturing sectors. The coalition has been producing different joint papers, helping the European Institutions to set the best Industrial Policy Strategy.

HYBRIT: Construction start for Globally-unique Pilot Plant for creating Fossil-free steel

Euromines member LKAB has partnered with SSAB and Vattenfall to create HYBRIT, a joint venture company that is working to be the first in the world to create fossil-free steel at the industrial level. HYBRIT recently broke ground for their pilot factory, beginning construction that is expected to be completed in 2020. The factory is located in Luleå, Sweden.

EU had an official presence at PDAC

The 2018 PDAC International Convention, Trade Show & Investors Exchange took place in Toronto, Canada from 4-7 March. The event is considered the premier international convention for the mining sector and attracted over 25,000 people from 135 countries. Some individual member states have participated in the 4-day conference in the past, but the EU had an official presence for the first time this year.
